Jewellery Care
Keep Your Silver Shining Forever. At Silvaniya, every piece is crafted with hallmarked 925 sterling silver — a precious metal that requires a little love and attention to maintain its brilliance. Follow this simple guide to keep your jewellery looking as good as new.
Why Does Silver Tarnish?
Tarnishing is a natural process for authentic 925 sterling silver. When silver is exposed to the air (oxygen and sulfur) or moisture, a chemical reaction occurs that can cause it to darken or look slightly dull over time.
The Good News: Tarnish is completely normal and does not mean your silver is fake or damaged. In fact, it is proof of its authenticity! With a little care, tarnished silver can be easily restored to its original shine.
Common Causes of Tarnish:
- Humidity, sweat, and body oils
- Perfumes, deodorants, and hairspray
- Lotions, cosmetics, and sunscreens
- Chlorine from swimming pools or saltwater from the beach
How to Prevent Tarnish: The "Last On, First Off" Rule
- Last On: Your jewellery should be the last thing you put on before leaving the house — after you have applied your makeup, perfume, and hairspray.
- First Off: Make sure your jewellery is the first thing you take off when you return home, before showering or sleeping.
Everyday Tips to Care for Your Silvaniya Jewellery
1. Store it Right (Most Important!)
When you are not wearing your jewellery, store it in the airtight ziplock pouch provided in your Silvaniya box. Oxygen and moisture are the biggest enemies of silver — keeping it sealed will slow down the tarnishing process significantly.
Pro Tip: Store each piece separately to avoid scratches from other jewellery.
2. Keep it Dry
Remove your silver rings, bracelets, and necklaces before washing your hands, showering, swimming, or doing the dishes. Water and chemicals can dull the shine quickly.
3. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Direct contact with household cleaners, sanitizers, and even strong perfumes can cause a chemical reaction on the silver surface. Always spray perfumes on your skin or clothes, wait for them to dry, and then wear your jewellery.
4. Wipe After Wear
At the end of the day, gently wipe your jewellery with a soft, dry cotton cloth (or a microfiber cloth) to remove any sweat or oils before putting it back into its pouch.
How to Clean Tarnished Silver at Home
If your jewellery has lost its shine, don't worry! You can easily clean it at home:
- The Soap & Water Method: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water. Soak your silver for 5-10 minutes. Gently scrub intricate designs using a soft-bristled baby toothbrush. Rinse with clean water and pat completely dry with a soft cloth.
- Silver Polishing Cloth: You can use a specialized silver cleaning cloth to gently rub the tarnished areas. The shine will return instantly!
A Note on Plated Jewellery (Gold/Rose Gold Polish)
If your Silvaniya jewellery has gold or rose-gold plating over the 925 silver, please note that plating naturally fades over time with continuous use. To prolong the plating, be extra careful to keep these pieces away from water, perfumes, and friction.
Wear your Silvaniya pieces with love, store them with care, and they will shine with you for a lifetime!
